When you think of setbacks you may have experienced in life, what comes to mind? The death of a dear one, a failed relationship, betrayal from a close friend, a bad work situation, the list goes on and on. Many of us have faced severe, or crippling setbacks at some point in our lives. However, falling into despair due to an impediment is not something Nick Vujicic allows in his life.
Mr. Vujicic was born without arms or legs, and yet he remains one of the most positive people on the planet. An inspirational speaker in twenty-four countries across the world, Nick is raising a family, pursuing surfing, and living a life of purpose. How did he find the courage to do this? He found it with faith, hope, and love.
After the initial shock when he was born, Nick’s parents bravely took on the challenge of giving him a normal life. It was extremely hard for them, but they did their best to make Nick independent from an early age. To give him the courage to swim for example, Nick’s father put him in the water at eighteen months.
Some gloomier times were coming unfortunately, and they pushed young Nick to the brink. At the age of 8, a little Nick harbored thoughts of suicide. By the age of ten he tried killing himself in a bathroom, but thankfully was unsuccessful. In Nick’s own words, “I felt there was no purpose. When you lack purpose and strength it is hard to hold on”. Perhaps the best decision Nick’s parents made was to send him to a mainstream school.
While Nick had an electric wheelchair for mobility and a team to assist him, he was still bullied, teased and mocked. Overcoming the psychological trauma built his character—something his parents were counting on. When asked how he gained the strength to face his fears, he talks about the turning point of his life.
At the impressionable age of 13, Nick read a newspaper article about a disabled man who not only achieved his dreams but helped others to do the same. According to Mr. Vujicic, this made a tremendous impact on him. He says, “I realized why God had made us like this—to give hope to others”. And so began his journey to triumph over adversity, break free of his bonds, and live life king size, helping millions of people across the world.
